What is Snoring?top

Snoring is a vibratory sound usually from  the soft palate and uvula produced during sleep as a result of narrowing of the upper airway.  Restricted air movement during breathing while sleeping can cause vibration of the structures of the throat.  Although snoring is considered a minor afflication it can also be an indication of a more serious condition, such as sleep apnoea.

What is Sleep Apnoea?top

Sleep apnoea is characterised by frequent pauses in breathing during sleep.  The severity of sleep apnoea can be determined by a sleep study.  Symptoms often include snoring, daytime sleepiness secondary to sleep deprivation and  loss of concentration.  It is estimated that about 80,000 people in Britain suffer from sleep apnoea, which is often undiagnosed.

Treatments for Snoring and Sleep Apnoeatop

Snoring can often improve with altering sleep position and changes in lifestyle, such as weight loss and regular exercise.  Treatment options include mandibular advancement devices, Celon radiofrequency treatment to the soft palate and laser assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP).  The main treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea is a Continuous Positive Air Pressure machine (CPAP).
